This trojan helmet is the modern day depiction of the helmet thought to have been worn by the Trojan officers at the time of the Trojan War when the ancient city of Troy was eventually destroyed after a brave defence by Hector.
The Troy Helmet is similar to the later Roman Centurions Helmet but providing an inferior level of protection to the rear and sides of the head, although looking every inch the helmet of a heroic trojan officer.
The ancient City-Kingdom of Troy was situated in modern day Turkey and commanded the entrance to the Black Sea from the Mediterranean thus giving the King of Troy a very powerful strategic advantage and vast wealth. The City itself is now believed to have been rebuilt 8 times in ancient times having been destroyed by a variety of calamities including fire, earthquake and of course war.
It is the Trojan War as told by Homer in his epic Iliad that is most readily known by most people and this is now believed to be related to the 7th City of Troy. The story has the beautiful Helen (the most beautiful woman in the world) carried off by Paris to his home city Troy. Unfortunately she was already married to the Greek Prince Menelaus who, with his brother Agamemnon laid siege to the city for 10 years culminating in the Wooden Horse ruse that led to the downfall and sack of Troy. The Greek gods were so infuriated by the destruction of their temples that the victorious Greeks were later dispersed and met a variety of fates, including the greatest warrior Odysseus who wandered for very many years, as told again by Homer in his Odyssey.
In the 2004 movie Paris is portrayed as a bit of a wimp whereas his brother Hector is the hero. Whilst our helmet didn't exactly feature in the film, it is very close to the helmets worn by many of the trojan defenders.
