Rickenbacker can claim an older history than most other famous guitar makers, originally set up to make electric versions of the Hawaiian guitar in the 1930's. But it wasn't until the early 1960's that their fortunes realy took off when John Lennon famously used one for most of the Beatles era.
Its sound is more "jangly" than most others and it is for this special sound that so many rock musicians like the Rickenbacker. Pete Townshend famously trashed Rickenbackers before he realised that this was a very expensive stage antic and used cheaper ones instead.
