The original Les Paul was introduced by Gibson in the early 1950's but there is some disagreement about how it actually came about and who was involved. That aside, it was a competitor to Fender's lower cost models and suffered for that.
It was and still is a very fine guitar, with models suitable for beginners and professionals alike. Gibson and Epiphone both produce the Les Paul, Epiphone in China, along with many imitators.
